About the Speciality

The Department of Thoracic & Chest Surgery at Medanta Super Speciality Hospital, Noida, offers comprehensive and specialised surgical care for diseases affecting the lungs, trachea, bronchi, mediastinum, pleura, oesophagus, diaphragm and chest wall. Led by Dr Belal Bin Asaf, Director – Thoracic Surgery, the department provides advanced surgical expertise for patients with both cancerous and non-cancerous thoracic conditions. The service combines modern surgical techniques, careful clinical assessment and multidisciplinary treatment planning to deliver individualised care.

Our Chairman Message

Thoracic surgery has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades. Advances in minimally invasive techniques, robotic technology and complex reconstructive procedures have made it possible to treat many challenging diseases of the chest with greater precision, while reducing surgical trauma and preserving lung function wherever possible. At Medanta Noida, our vision is to make advanced thoracic surgical care accessible to patients closer to their homes, without compromising on clinical expertise, safety or quality of treatment. Our department offers comprehensive surgical management of lung cancer, mediastinal and thymic tumours, complex airway disorders, pleural diseases and a wide range of benign thoracic conditions. We place particular emphasis on individualised treatment planning, multidisciplinary collaboration and selecting the most appropriate surgical approach for each patient. I firmly believe that excellence in thoracic surgery is not defined merely by the sophistication of technology, but by sound clinical judgement, surgical precision, compassion and an unwavering commitment to patient safety. Our endeavour is to build a centre where patients and their families can approach us with confidence, knowing that every treatment decision is guided by experience, evidence and a genuine commitment to their well-being.

Our Treatments

The Department of Thoracic & Chest Surgery offers specialised treatment for a wide spectrum of malignant, benign, infectious and structural disorders of the chest. Management is tailored to the patient's diagnosis, disease severity and overall clinical condition.

01
Bronchiectasis & Pulmonary Aspergilloma
Bronchiectasis causes permanent widening and damage of the airways, often leading to recurrent infections, chronic sputum production and sometimes haemoptysis. Pulmonary aspergilloma is a fungal mass that can develop within a pre-existing lung cavity and may cause recurrent or severe bleeding. Surgical treatment may be considered in carefully selected patients, particularly when disease is localised and symptoms or complications cannot be adequately controlled by non-surgical treatment. Procedures may include segmentectomy, lobectomy or more extensive resection when necessary.
02
Empyema & Pleural Infections
Empyema is an accumulation of infected fluid or pus in the pleural space surrounding the lung. Advanced infections can cause thick fibrous tissue to develop, restricting normal lung expansion. Treatment may require antibiotics, pleural drainage, intrapleural medication or surgical intervention. The department provides VATS drainage and decortication as well as open decortication when necessary, with the objective of controlling infection and allowing lung re-expansion.
03
Pneumothorax & Persistent Air Leak
Pneumothorax, commonly called a collapsed lung, occurs when air accumulates between the lung and chest wall. Although some episodes can be treated without surgery, recurrent pneumothorax, persistent air leakage and selected high-risk first episodes may require surgical intervention. VATS procedures may include treatment or removal of lung blebs or bullae, together with an appropriate pleurodesis technique to reduce recurrence risk.
04
Thymoma, Mediastinal Tumours & Myasthenia Gravis
Mediastinal tumours may arise from the thymus, lymphatic tissue, nerves or other structures within the central chest. The department offers surgical treatment for thymoma, thymic cysts, selected neurogenic tumours and other mediastinal masses. Minimally invasive VATS or robotic-assisted thymectomy may be considered in suitable patients, while larger or invasive tumours may require open surgery. Thymectomy may also be beneficial for selected patients with myasthenia gravis following multidisciplinary evaluation with neurology.
05
Lung Cancer & Pulmonary Nodules
Lung cancer requires accurate staging, assessment of pulmonary function and individualised treatment planning. The department offers surgical evaluation and treatment for early-stage and selected locally advanced lung cancers, as well as suspicious pulmonary nodules requiring diagnosis or removal. Procedures include VATS or robotic-assisted segmentectomy and lobectomy, bronchial sleeve resections and more extensive lung surgery when indicated. Treatment is coordinated with the thoracic oncology team to determine the most appropriate sequence of surgery, systemic therapy and radiotherapy.
06
Pulmonary Hydatid Disease & Other Complex Lung Conditions
Certain parasitic infections, lung cysts and structural abnormalities may require surgical treatment when they cause symptoms or complications. Management is individualised according to the nature of the lesion, its location and the patient's clinical condition.
07
Pleural Tumours & Mesothelioma
Pleural tumours arise from the lining surrounding the lungs and may be benign or malignant. The department provides diagnostic evaluation, pleural biopsy and surgical assessment for selected pleural malignancies, including mesothelioma. Treatment decisions depend on disease type, stage, patient fitness and multidisciplinary oncology recommendations.
08
Chest Trauma & Rib Fractures
Serious chest injuries may cause multiple rib fractures, flail chest, lung injury, bleeding into the chest or persistent air leakage. The department provides surgical evaluation for complex thoracic injuries, including selected patients who may benefit from rib fracture fixation, VATS or open procedures. Emergency trauma management is coordinated with the relevant emergency, anaesthesia, intensive care and surgical teams.
Our Expertise

Advanced Thoracic Surgical Expertise with an Emphasis on Precision, Safety and Lung Preservation The Department of Thoracic & Chest Surgery offers expertise in minimally invasive and complex open thoracic procedures for cancerous and non-cancerous con

Complex Chest Wall, Diaphragmatic & Oesophageal Surgery
The department also provides specialised surgical treatment for selected chest wall tumours, chest wall deformities, diaphragmatic abnormalities and oesophageal conditions. Procedures range from minimally invasive approaches to complex open resections and reconstruction when required. Treatment is individualised through careful preoperative assessment and multidisciplinary planning.
Surgery for Complex Pulmonary Infections & Pleural Disease
Advanced thoracic infections may require surgical management when antibiotics, drainage or other treatments are insufficient. The department offers expertise in VATS and open decortication for empyema, lung resections for selected bronchiectasis or aspergilloma, and surgery for persistent pneumothorax and air leakage. The choice of operation depends on disease extent, lung function, infection status and overall patient condition.
Thymectomy & Mediastinal Tumour Surgery
The department provides surgical expertise for thymoma, thymic tumours, mediastinal cysts and selected other mediastinal masses. VATS and robotic-assisted approaches may be suitable for certain lesions, while large or invasive tumours may require open surgical access and, occasionally, complex reconstruction. Thymectomy for myasthenia gravis is considered in eligible patients after neurological assessment and appropriate optimisation.
Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery – VATS & Robotic Surgery
Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery and robotic-assisted surgery are established minimally invasive approaches that allow selected chest operations to be performed through small incisions. VATS uses a high-definition camera and specialised thoracoscopic instruments, while robotic-assisted surgery provides three-dimensional visualisation and articulated instrumentation under the direct control of the operating surgeon. These techniques may be used for lung resections, mediastinal tumour surgery, thymectomy, pleural procedures and selected other thoracic operations. The suitability of each approach is determined by the patient's condition, anatomical findings, procedural complexity and surgical safety.
Advanced Lung Cancer Surgery & Lung-Preserving Resections
Lung cancer surgery requires careful assessment of oncological clearance and preservation of postoperative lung function. The department provides expertise in anatomical segmentectomy, lobectomy, bronchial sleeve resections and pneumonectomy when necessary. Minimally invasive approaches are considered where appropriate, and lung-preserving procedures may be used in selected patients without compromising essential oncological treatment objectives.
Complex Tracheal & Bronchial Reconstruction
Complex airway surgery requires detailed anatomical planning and specialised reconstructive techniques. The department provides surgical management of selected tracheal strictures, airway tumours and bronchial abnormalities. Procedures may include tracheal resection with reconstruction, bronchial sleeve resections and other airway-preserving operations. These procedures are planned in coordination with airway, anaesthesia and critical care teams.

Robotic-Assisted Thoracic Surgery
Robotic-assisted surgical systems combine high-definition three-dimensional imaging with articulated instruments that allow controlled and precise movements within confined anatomical spaces. The operating surgeon remains in direct control of all surgical movements. Robotic-assisted approaches can be useful for selected lung resections, thymectomy, mediastinal surgery and other complex thoracic procedures. The choice between robotic, VATS and open surgery is determined by clinical requirements rather than technology alone.
